This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract.
The objectives are as follows:
To assess the efficacy, effectiveness and safety of daily or intermittent supplementation of pregnant women with iron alone or in conjunction with folic acid. The effectiveness of different treatments for iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy (Cuervo 2003) and the effects of supplementation with iron and vitamin A (Van den Broek 2003) are covered in other Cochrane Reviews. The effectiveness of vitamin C will be covered in another Cochrane Review currently in preparation (Rumbold 2003). The effects of supplementation with folic acid alone (Mahomed 2003c) or its effectiveness on the prevalence of neural tube defects periconceptionally is also evaluated elsewhere (Lumley 2003).
